How is Cooking a Learning Experience?

What we've been reading, watching, and thinking about at Alpine Valley School this week.

We've covered this ground before, but it's worth repeating that many activities are learning experiences. Education is not simply a function of sitting in a classroom being taught by an instructor, it's the experience of living real life as much as possible. Our school is designed as a scaled down version of the adult world so students can practice making their own decisions and facing the consequences of their actions.

And yes, this is a meme, but it's also got the ring of truth about it...
A little bit like this tweet (which went viral)...
The reality is that modern schools are not designed for learning - they're designed for showing off. Essential life skills are often overlooked, or not pursued at all, in service of standardized testing. We believe that education should focus on real life and self-knowledge, both things that are essential for people growing up in the modern world.

To see what all this looks like in the real world, check out the video below: our sister school Tallgrass made a video about a "typical" day at school, which walks through a day on their campus...
Ever wonder what goes on during the day at Tallgrass Sudbury School? Well here is a sneak peak of our "typical" day! Brought to you by our YouTube Film Production class.
Still not sure about your school choice for the year? Maybe it's time for something completely new. Come visit and see if our school might be right for you!
