Quote we love:

We are loving this quote from writer John Holt this week - we've found it to be very true. When learning is forced, students lose the joy of discovery, and learn that their instincts and desires are not to be trusted. It's not always easy to discover for yourself (it's actually *very* hard) but the journey is incredibly rewarding, as many of our graduates have expressed.

Clarity on screen time...

We came across a couple of articles this week regarding screen time, and an attempt at gaining some clarity around this hot-button issue.

The first article: "Blame Society, Not Screen Time" is from the New York Times. A quote from the article reads: "If Americans truly want to reduce the amount young people use technology, we should free up more of their time." - we absolutely agree.

Another resource: "Kids Aren't Addicted to Technology, They're Addicted to Getting Together" from LetGrow.org covers similar ground (it actually quotes the first article as well). Quote: "This is the Catch-22 that we’ve trapped today’s youth in. We’ve locked them indoors because we see the physical world as more dangerous than ever before, even though by almost every measure, we live in the safest society to date. We put unprecedented demands on our kids, maxing them out with structured activities, homework and heavy expectations. And then we’re surprised when they’re frazzled and strung out."

Many adults are grappling with the appropriate balance of screen time in our own lives, should it come as any surprise that our kids are too? What we find at Alpine Valley School is that screens are a tool - a way to connect, to learn, to accomplish a task - not the end goal themselves. We've written about this a lot, and you can see all of those resources on our website
