Success

Success in Tomorrow’s World Requires New Skills

Our children’s adult lives will be marked by a flood of information and choices. They must acquire the ability to handle this future in an intelligent, meaningful way. Alpine Valley students learn how to learn what they need to know and, in so doing, build a solid foundation of self-discipline and self-confidence.

Self-Directed Learning Allows Students to Maximize Their Potential

The democratic approach and self-directed learning of the Sudbury model permit students to pursue their interests at their own pace and in their own way, in accordance with their natures, interests and goals. They have the opportunity to spend as much time as needed to understand a subject and move on when their curiosity has been satisfied. To see how children at AVS become effective young adults, please visit How Learning Happens Here  and our Graduation page.

Successful People Are Internally Driven

The values of freedom, responsibility and respect help children learn self-control, resourcefulness and tenacity. When a strong sense of self is combined with an awareness and consideration of others, children find a place for themselves in the world as effective young adults.  Alpine Valley School works for students of all types: the creative, studious, sociable, independent, and others who want a supportive yet flexible environment.

A Safe Environment Facilitates Success

We provide a safe learning environment for children 5 to 19 to flourish and grow in their own way and time, exploring the world and learning from the consequences of their actions. Our school community often feels like a family, where members feel genuine care and concern for each other. Our campus is located in a quiet suburban neighborhood near agricultural land, a nature sanctuary, and public parks.

“Without Alpine Valley School, I would not have graduated from high school. I am now working with children with autism as my chosen career. AVS's philosophy allows me to be successful today. The school gave me the ability to respect a child . . . . and allow them to grow in their own unique way.”

— Alpine Valley Graduate

“This school fosters success. Every single student who’s wanted to go to college has been able to.”

— AVS parent, psychiatrist, and professor of pediatrics
